Happy New Year, Commander!

Happy New Year to one and all from Steel Squadron HQ!

It's been a wonderful first year for Armada, and we've seen a lot in just this time.  Here's to hopefully many more going forward.

Steel Squadron HQ will be going forward with you into the new year, with lots more content planned.  But I wouldn't be here writing it if it we're for you, the reader, actually stopping by to read.  So let's stop and look at what we have planned going forward for January:

First:  I've got to finish up Wave 2 Upgrades!  Turbolasers still need to be written about.  Once that is out of the way, I want to talk about kitting out your ships, and how their role and your overall strategy can change depending on the upgrade combinations.

I also want to revisit objectives, something requested by AlexW during a friendly game on Vassal.  It's one of the first things I've written about on here, and the very first article I put up about Armada. While I went back in and cleaned up the article awhile ago, it feels like something that I should clear through again.  One thing I am interested in though, are there any objectives that you just don't see - either because they are never played or because they are never brought in the first place?  Leave a comment below.

Another project I want to get started on is to put together a "New Player's Guide" with links to all the best resources the community has to offer.  Something for truly new players - someone who just got the core set, for example - that you can point them to and say "go here and it'll get you started."  We have a lot of really good work out there to get folks going, but it hasn't all been gathered in one place yet, and I'm hoping I can make that happen.  Keep your eyes peeled for it, and if you have anything you think should be included, fire up a comment!

I'm also running the FFG Forums Armada Vassal World Cup - the fourth tournament we've had on the forums, and the third I have been officiating.  As always, it is a real blast to see people come together from around the world to play our game.  I'd definitely suggest participating if you have the chance.  We will likely be spending some time discussing that tournament, what lists we are seeing, what lists did well, and maybe the chance to analyze objectives used.  I know I am looking forward to it!

Finally, I have said in the past that I will do it, but I need to put out an update to the Vassal How To Guide that I made back in the early days of Armada's Vassal experience.  The updates to the thing have rendered the old guide... not useless, but not exactly helpful either.

So, needless to say, that is a lot of work ahead of me.  Plus, you folks might have some ideas for things you want me to tackle, talk about, or just blindly stumble through.  If you do, let me know.  I can't write about it if I don't know to write on it.

I'm going to leave off with a thank you once more, to each and every one of you that read this blog.  This is here because of you.  Thank you for encouraging me to write about little plastic spaceships.  It's improved my game, and I can only hope that reading about it improves yours as well.

  1. As a new player myself, a new player guide would be very welcome not to mention having a place to send my friends as I get them more interested. Also I have not seen much about objectives (and frankly have never played with them) so any onsite to that part of the game would be most welcome. Thanks for doing all you do your site has been a great resource for a new player. I especially like that you go over every upgrade card and don't just focus on the obvious combos.

    1. You definitely should start playing with them - they add quite a bit of difference to the game than just a straight up brawl.

Look in here on Monday for the first part of the objective update.

  2. I'm a fairly new player and your site has been a great help since I found it a couple of weeks ago.
For the future I would really like to see articles about how to actually manoeuvre your ships, formations, and how to catch (or avoid) fire arcs etc...
    Keep it up! :)

    1. That's not a bad idea - definitely something I'll be looking into getting written once I start working my way through the list up top.

  4. A updated guide for vassal would be fabulous! I live in Indonesia and have no option of playing with other other players (unless I facilitate a game and teach them). It would be great to hone my skills in vassal.
